1Per-km rates, and which car fits your group

On a tour, the car is charged by the kilometre, and the rate depends on its size. All in, with the driver, tolls and taxes, a Swift works out at about ₹10 per km, a Dzire or Etios ₹11, an Ertiga ₹13 and an Innova Crysta ₹15.5. A tempo traveller is about ₹19.5, a Fortuner about ₹22, and luxury cars such as an Audi or BMW start from about ₹48.5. A sedan suits two or three guests with suitcases, an Ertiga a family of four with luggage, and an Innova Crysta five to seven, or older parents on long drives. For 9 to 17 people, a tempo traveller keeps the group together.

2The 300 km daily minimum

On a multi-day tour, each day is charged for at least 300 km. Long and short days even out: Jaipur to Jodhpur is about 337 km and Jodhpur to Jaisalmer about 285, while a day seeing Udaipur might be 30. So a 7-day tour is charged at 2,100 km whether you drive all of it or not. If your route is longer than that, you pay for the real distance, worked out as the route there and back plus about 50 km a day around town. Three days to Jaisalmer and back comes to about 1,270 km rather than 900. When you compare quotes, check whether a rate is for the car alone, ₹6.5 per km for a Dzire with us, or all in.

3Driver allowance, tolls, parking and state tax

Your driver gets ₹400 a day for his food and day pay, and ₹300 a night for his room, so you don't arrange or pay for where he sleeps. On a 7-day tour that's ₹2,800 and ₹1,800. Tolls are worked out for the route: Jaipur to Udaipur is about ₹480 each way, and Jaipur to Jodhpur about ₹300. Parking is ₹100 a day. Inside Rajasthan there's no state entry tax, but leaving the state adds one: ₹400 for Uttar Pradesh on the way to Agra, ₹300 for Delhi and ₹500 for Gujarat. Our 10% service charge and 5% GST go on top. All of it is in the quote, so you pay nothing in cash at toll plazas.

4A 5-day example, line by line

Here's a 5-day tour from Jaipur to Udaipur and back in an Innova Crysta. The car is 1,500 km at ₹10.5, or ₹15,750. The driver's allowance is 5 days at ₹400, ₹2,000, and his night stay 4 nights at ₹300, ₹1,200. Tolls there and back are ₹960, and parking ₹500. That makes ₹20,410, plus ₹2,041 service charge and ₹1,123 GST, about ₹23,600 in all. We quote it as ₹22,400 to ₹25,950, as an estimate, because the route and stops can change it. The same trip is about ₹15,800 to ₹18,300 in a Dzire and ₹19,100 to ₹22,100 in an Ertiga. The final fare is agreed on WhatsApp before you book.

5How a day on the road runs

The same driver stays with you from the first pickup to the last drop. Each morning he's at your hotel at the time you agree, usually after breakfast. Long drives start in the morning so you arrive before dark, and we don't drive through the night. On the highway he stops every two hours or so for tea and a stretch. At forts and old-city sights he drops you at the gate and waits in a paid lot nearby, and that parking is in your fare. In the evening he goes to his own room, and you're free until the next morning. You can change the plan from one day to the next; just tell him the night before.

6What to check before you book

Whoever you book with, get the quote in writing and make sure it's all in: the car, the kilometres, the driver's allowance and night stay, tolls, parking, state taxes and GST. Ask how extra kilometres are charged if you add a detour. Check that the car is air-conditioned and ask how old it is, as 500 km days in May are hard on a tired car. Ask whether the driver has done your route before. Be clear about who pays for what: with us, hotels, meals, entry tickets, guides and safaris are yours, and there are no forced shopping stops. If a quote is far below the numbers here, ask what's been left out.
